Lieutenant Gracie Jones joined the Knoxville Police Department on November 12, 1979. She initially worked as a Patrol Officer for nine and one-half years before being promoted to a Criminal Investigator and assigned to the Narcotics Unit. After working for three years in the Narcotics Unit, she was transferred to the Major Crimes Division, where she handled Homicides, Rapes, Robberies and Assaults. She was promoted in January 1994 to Sergeant and was assigned to the West District Patrol Unit. In June 1996, she was given the opportunity to create and supervise the Gang Task Force. The responsibilities of the Gang Task Force are to identify gangs and their members, create educational programs for communities, church groups and law enforcement agencies and intervene in the criminal activities of members. In June 1997, after the Gang Task Force had key program operations in place, Lieutenant Jones was assigned as supervisor of the Juvenile Unit. The Juvenile Unit handles all crimes committed by and against juveniles, child sex abuse and child physical abuse cases, all missing persons, the Serious Habitual Offender Comprehensive Action Program (SHOCAP), the Truancy/Curfew Center, and any crimes committed over the Internet involving children.
She was promoted to Lieutenant in July 2000 and oversees the Family Services Section. She is responsible for the Juvenile Unit, Domestic Violence Unit and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Lieutenant Jones graduated with honors from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Sociology as Pertains to Criminal Justice. She is also a graduate of the Leadership Knoxville, Class of 1999.
